ACTIVISTS
ADAPT is where disability activism is happening. As
American Disabled for Accessible Public Transit, ADAPT got us on
busses, trains, and airplanes. As American Disabled for
Attendant Programs Today, they got us federal Money Follows the
Person, and are still fighting for MiCASSA - legislation that
would require every state's Medicaid to fund home and commnity
based services. They have two national actions a year. Visit
them at
adapt.org.
ADAPT also has outstanding local chapters in
Rochester, NY;
and Topeka, KS.
The National Council on Independent Living
(NCIL)
is our voice on
Capitol Hill. NCIL will keep you posted on national issues with
action alerts
and a newsletter, and has a conference once a year that includes
a march to the Capitol by hundreds of IL advocates, who then
visit legislators from their states. Your membership as an
individual is $40 and suppoprts us politically.
In 2006, Mark Boatman, who is quadriplegic and a vent
user, left North Dakota, where he had his friends and family but
not 24/7 home and
community based care, to Missoula, Montana, where he now lives
with
another vent user and his wife, and gets 24/7 care. Mark left 3
years of
imprisonment in a nursing home and fighting the state, to
freedom and
friendship, and an active- and activist - life. Catch up with
him on his blog at
